Just for a moment, we’ll take back those things we said about the pettiness of cable news. And for a moment, we’ll recognize this as proof that there are still some teeth in the First Ammendment.
Unfortunately, this will likely never result in the resignation Olberman rightly suggests, but if it results in him getting fired anytime soon, then we’ll take back the nice things we said about cable news and the consitution.
I just finished watching a full length documentary film on Google video called Zeitgeist (no, nothing to do with the Smashing Pumpkins record). It’s not the most skillfuly made documentary work you’ll find, but it’s chock full of really astounding assertions which — at the very least — can serve as a conversation fodder for your next cocktail infused intellectual gathering.
We’ll make no representations as to the validity of the claims made in Zeitgeist (except for all the stuff about Jesus), but bullshit or no, it will give you pause and keep you riveted to your computer.
As part of a recent obsession I’ve developed with wanting to know when fruits and vegetables are “in-season” so I can be eating fresher produce, I’m apparently noticing more and more food news. So when I read that 92% of Americans support measures to label food products with their country of origin, I assumed this would be a slam dunk. Right? 92%? That’s a good majority, and that ought to buy you something in a democracy, right? We’ll see about that.In the meantime, our reading assignment is Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma. It’s a fascinating treatise that exposes some nuance in the history of American food, and even sheds some important light on current “organic” food business. At the end of the day, we just think we all ought to know exactly what we’re putting in our mouths. Deliciousness can no longer be our only criteria.
500 years ago — before the birth of our wonderfully Christian nation — many of the maladies of the day were attributed to “dark magic” and witchcraft. This was a period during which thousands of innocent women were ripped from their loved-ones and violently burned at the stake for their “crimes”. Clearly we’ve made one heck of alot of progress towards not burning so many innocent people at the stake, but we still think we’ve got quite a bit of work yet to do. Sam Harris has some excellent comments on this subject over at The Huffington Post which make for excellent reading.
Use your new iPhone to find a local theater where you can go see Sicko (you can also use the newspaper…we’re told they have movie listings as well). This is an important film about an imminently important issue. Whether you’re a republican, a democrat, or whatever ticket Pat Buchanon ran on the last time around, you should agree that our for-profit healthcare system is failing every citizen of this country.
