Hopped Up Nation

By adam || April 25, 1996

“I think it’s a wonderful statement about our society that we have such stringent requirements for the most menial of jobs and next to nothing for the bigger and better positions.”

Had to go pee in a cup today. I didn’t have much of a problem, but I felt really bad for the woman in the lobby. When I walked in I heard her tell the technician she couldn’t do it. On that prompt, I ran down the hall and slammed a mountain dew, and I was golden. But I felt really badly for the poor woman who had to sit in the lobby and watch soaps on a little black and white TV until she felt capable of filling the cup.

I think it’s a wonderful statement about our society that we have such stringent requirements for the most menial of jobs and next to nothing for the bigger and better positions. Does Newt Gingrich have to take a drug test?  What about Bob Dole? It seems to me he would have to be hopped up on something to be that energetic at his age. The whole nation is hopped up on something, but the people who clean the hotel rooms, carry the bags, and pump the gas need to be as clean as newly fallen snow just to get the opportunity to serve the others.

I actually put the lady at the “BIG DESK” on edge when I offhandedly joked about how convenient it was that I wasn’t being tested during my early college years. Fuck! Am I supposed to have always been a saint? It’s so silly, I’m having trouble understanding where the seriousness in all of this is — at least the woman at the lab had a sense of humor – but then, dealing with urine all day, you’d have to I guess.

So, in an effort to keep this rant brief, I propose we do random drug tests on all elected officials and other figures of “importance” on some sort of regular basis. I don’t really even want to know if they’re doing drugs, I could really care less, I just want them to experience the unconditional twenty-four hour period of discomfort before the results come back. Why the hell is it that things like this can always make you feel guilty even when you know you’re innocent? It just doesn’t seem fair that the little people should experience it alone.

Regards.
